So Why Use Cloth Nappies?

The world of real nappies is no longer just about terry squares, sharp pins and harsh plastic pants.  These days, modern cloth nappies are available in all shapes and sizes, in different fabrics and with a choice of colours and patterns.  No pins are needed, with nappies being fastened with either velcro, poppers, the ingenious nappy nippa or simply pad folded.

There is no longer any need to soak or boil your nappies, they can be dry pailed and washed at 60 degrees.  Or for even more convenience, you could use our laundry service

What Are The Benefits?

Apart from the obvious enviromental benefits of using cloth nappies (see nappy facts ) there are many additional benefits for both parent and baby.  Modern real nappies are as easy to use as disposables and because they are elasticated in all the right places, they are more reliable at preventing leaks and containing 'explosive poos'.

The natural absorbancy of cloth means no exposure to gels or chemicals to keep your baby dry and their soft and gentle texture means maximum comfort for your baby.

Depending on the nappy system you choose, you can save as much as £500.00 per child compared to the cost of disposables.  This saving increases with each child.  The weekly cost of our nappy laundry service is comparable with that of top brand disposables.

Babies who wear real nappies often potty train around 6 months earlier than babies in disposables as they can feel when they have become wet and instinctively want to make that next step to the potty.  This means you can save you even more.

How Do They Work?

All nappy systems comprise of three parts:

Liner – to catch solids, and provide a stay-dry barrier between the baby’s bottom and the wet nappy. These come as biodegradable, with the liner and solids being flushed together down the toilet or other options include fleece, which is soft and comfy, silk, which has healing qualities and is especially good for sensitive skin, or stay dry polyester.

Nappy – the absorbent part.  You can choose between flat nappies (terrys and prefolds) or shaped nappies.  Fabrics include cotton, fleece, hemp, flannelette or bamboo and are available in a variety of colours and patterns.  They fasten with poppers, velcro or a nippa or held in place with a tight fitting wrap.

Wrap – the waterproof part.  Wraps are made from breathable waterproof or water resistant fabrics, which keep your baby's clothes dry, but still let air circulate around the nappy area.  Like the nappies, wraps are available in a variety of colours and patterns.  They fasten with aplix (strengthened velcro) or poppers, and some are shaped like pants for older babies.  Wraps are mainly made from PUL (Polyurethane Laminate), but also come in fleece and wool.  A good fitting wrap is especially important to ensure good containment with no leakage and comfort for your baby.
